Six stories worth looking up for
There’s never been a stranger or more exciting time to look up. Passenger-carrying aircraft are weeks from real airspace, supermarket lunches are arriving by air, farm drones the size of small cars are lifting 100kg loads — and in a lab somewhere, engineers are keeping a drone aloft with a laser. As a CAA-registered operator surveying roofs across North London, here’s what caught our eye this month. Every story has been checked against at least two independent sources.
Flying taxis are about to enter real US airspace — and a British firm is in the mix
In March, the US Department of Transportation and the FAA selected eight advanced air mobility projects to begin flying electric air taxis (eVTOLs) in live, controlled airspace this summer, across 26 states. These aren’t toys — they look like oversized passenger-carrying drones, lifting off on rotors before tilting into winged flight.
One of the year’s most impressive milestones came from home soil. On 14 April, British firm Vertical Aerospace flew its VX4 through a full vertical-to-wing transition at Cotswold Airport — the single hardest manoeuvre one of these aircraft has to perform. Affordable, everyday services are still years away (certification is enormously demanding), but the gap between tech demo and real service is closing fast.

Drone delivery officially stops being a novelty
On 10 June, Wing (owned by Google’s parent company Alphabet) and Walmart announced they are expanding their delivery network to seven new US metro areas — Memphis, New Orleans, Philadelphia, Phoenix, San Diego, the San Francisco Bay Area and Salt Lake City — making it the largest drone delivery network in the country. The partnership has now passed one million commercial deliveries, with a goal of reaching over 40 million Americans by 2027.
Closer to home, the UK is moving too. Amazon has secured Civil Aviation Authority permission to begin same-day drone parcel deliveries in Britain, and the CAA’s Future of Flight roadmap targets routine Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) operations by 2027 — the regulatory key to UK deliveries and long-range inspections over towns and villages.

The farm drones have gone enormous
Agricultural drones are now among the largest uncrewed aircraft flying. DJI’s new flagship, the Agras T100 — twelve years in development — carries a 100-litre spray tank, a 150-litre spreading hopper and can lift payloads up to 100kg. And it isn’t even the biggest: Chinese manufacturers are pushing machines with 200-litre tanks.
Why does a roof surveyor care about farm drones? Because every leap in payload, endurance and obstacle-avoidance on these giants eventually trickles down into the survey drones we fly. “Infinite flight”: charging a drone with a laser beam
This one belongs in science fiction, but it’s real. US firm PowerLight Technologies has been beaming kilowatt-class power up to a drone in flight using a tightly focused, invisible laser — a kind of “wireless power line in the sky”. A ground transmitter locks onto the aircraft and delivers energy to an onboard receiver, reportedly over distances approaching two kilometres and altitudes up to around 5,000 feet.
The promise is “infinite flight” — a drone that never has to land to recharge. A sensible caveat: “infinite” really means “indefinite, as long as the beam stays locked and unobstructed”, since fog, dust and smoke degrade it. Even so, a persistent electric drone that stays up for hours could transform the monitoring of forests, coastlines and infrastructure.

The World Cup just created a giant “no-drone zone”
With the FIFA World Cup running from 11 June to 19 July across North America, the FAA has rolled out extensive temporary flight restrictions — effectively “No Drone Zones” — around stadiums, fan festivals, team hotels and training sites. The first took effect in Los Angeles on 12 June.
It’s a useful reminder for every pilot: airspace rules change constantly, and temporary restrictions can appear around events, incidents and VIP movements with little notice. Checking current restrictions before every flight isn’t bureaucracy — it’s the difference between a legal flight and a very expensive mistake. In the UK, that means checking the Drone and Model Aircraft Code before every take-off.

The quiet story: supply chains and rare-earth magnets
Behind all the eye-catching machines, 2026’s quieter theme is geopolitics. Governments are racing to secure domestic drone supply chains, reduce reliance on Chinese-made components, and even legislate over the rare-earth magnets inside drone motors. For an operator like us, the practical upshot is a slowly shifting picture of which drones are approved, where, and for what — something we track closely so our flying stays fully compliant.
